Brenda Hudson, PhD, is a teacher, editor, certified journal facilitator, author, and creative writer. She leads writing workshops where participants create unique stories and books of themselves using journaling and book arts techniques.
Brenda loves helping families capture their stories across generations. Her how-to book Story by Story: 15 Projects to Write Your Family Legacy is based on her successful legacy writing workshops.
She also is passionate about helping youth articulate who they are, in their own words, to form strong identities and resilience. She is proud to partner with the nonprofit organizations Zoe’s Story and Family Voices of Minnesota, working with amazing children facing rare and chronic health conditions and their equally amazing families.
Writing has been a constant companion throughout Brenda’s life and career. As a child, she used writing to help figure things out, expressing thoughts and asking questions in her journal. In her adult life, she worked in journalism at NBC News in London and New York and at the BBC World Service Television in London. After living abroad for nearly 10 years, she returned to the Midwest, where she worked as a health sciences writer at the University of Minnesota and obtained her PhD from the university’s Department of Writing Studies. She is a credentialed journal facilitator through the Therapeutic Writing Institute. Today, in addition to leading creative writing workshops, she teaches academic writing to doctoral students.
Through Voiced Life, Brenda offers a variety of writing workshops for adults and youth. Participants learn journaling and book arts techniques in a fun and supportive environment—where they are encouraged to selfishly focus on themselves! Brenda also is a frequent teaching artist at the Loft Literary Center in Minneapolis, where she has received its Excellence in Teaching Fellowship multiple times, and at the Madeline Island School of the Arts, where she teaches legacy writing.
